Is it a Trap?

Ashrant Bhartia

June 2013

Although it's only recently been labelled a genre, it indeed originates from a real place. A place deep down south, where the grittiness  and hard attitude were so omnipresent that it transcended into the local sound and started to shape the local community. "The Trap" itself simply refers to the hold, the houses and the street corners where drugs dictated the lives of many.

The "Trap Game" essentially grew from southern rappers like Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy and lex Luger; however its appeal began to escalate with the arrival of DJ Screw, Trap-A-Holics and TI's influential album "Trap Musik". It was these guys who brought about the bass-rattling and 808-heavy rap beats, the signature "machine-gun snare" and the classic catchphrases "run the traaaaap" and "damn son, wher'd you find this" which has inherently typified this music as a genre.

If you're still a little confused as to what exactly Trap Music is, then let us break it down for you. According to runthetrap.com it consists of:

- 1/3 Hip Hop

- 1/3 Dance Music

 and

- 1/3 Dubstep

The most famous track lurking in the Trap genre is Baauer's 'Harlem Shake', but you're probably sick of it...

A new genre of music is hitting the airwaves, and apparently it's been a long time coming. So what exactly is Trap? Where did it come from? And why is everyone talking about it? Don't worry, we'll answer these questions soon enough.

So what does Trap (sometimes referred to as trapstep, trvp) sound like?

The easiest way to understand is just to listen to it (duh..), but don't worry we've done the hard work and picked out some of the finest tracks (including some remixes) for you...so sit back, relax and enjoy.

Ellie Goulding - High For This Cover (BIG MAKK RE-UP)

Benny Benassi - Satisfaction (RL Grime Remix)

DJ Khaled - I'm On One (Sinjin Hawke Remix)
